The Finnish National Sailing Team counts on FREJA’s overseas shipping service expertise

Challenge

The Finnish national sailing team spends over 200 days a year abroad. The overseas shipping of equipment and supplies to the right place at the right time requires top-of-the-line expertise in logistics.

Solution

The cooperation between the Finnish national sailing team and FREJA started in autumn, 2014. A prime example of FREJA’s overseas shipping services took place during the first steps of the journey, as the national team headed for a World Cup regatta in Santander, Spain. Part of the team was willing to send their gear onwards to Rio as a preparation to the training camps, whereas the rest of the team’s equipment was to be shipped back to Finland. On top of this, there was a shipment of brand new sailing equipment to be transported directly from New Zealand to Brazil. FREJA organized the logistics of the Finnish team’s vessels, trailers and vehicles from Helsinki to Santander, from where they were shipped further on by sea to Brazil.

As a shipment arrives to its destination, FREJA sees to that it will be handed over to the right people at the receiving end. In Rio the gear was received by the logistic partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who had received a precise briefing by FREJA in order to delivering the shipment to a local office of Wärtsilä Corporation. As a fellow logistics partner of the national team, Wärtsilä will see to the athletes’ equipment and store it until the start of the Olympics.

Results

The overseas shipping services for the Finnish national sailing team comprise a complex entity, and the cooperation with the FREJA professionals brings a great deal of relief to the everyday life of the team.

“We have relied on FREJA’s services for years, and the Finnish national sailing team can now rest assured, when it comes to logistics. FREJA completes our partnership. Now we can be sure that our Olympic representatives’ vessels are safely delivered to the Wärtsilä office in Niteroi, and they are carefully stored, whenever the athletes reside back home in Finland” says Atte Palomäki, Executive Vice President, Communications and Branding, Wärtsilä.

About the cooperation, Managing Director FREJA Finland says: “We want to do our share of supporting the athletes in reaching their goals. Now we have a great opportunity of doing that by the means of our core expertise.”
