The history of dynamic and progressive thinking
Since the beginning on April 1st 1985 FREJA’s history has been characterized by far-reaching decisions and progressive thinking. The company is dynamic, internationally oriented and has a constant focus on developing according to the customers’ wishes and needs.
During the first five years, the founders Jørgen Hansen and Frede Alstrup ran the company as a general partnership (I/S), but as the turnover exceeded DKK 100m in 1990, FREJA was transferred to a private limited company (A/S). 1990 was also the year in which we opened the first branch outside Skive as we opened an office in Hvidovre near Copenhagen.
1996 became an eventful year, partly because Jørgen Hansen became sole owner of the company but also because it was the year of FREJA’s first acquisition in the business. The forwarding agency Nørgård with branches in Viborg, Greve and Padborg was acquired and FREJA grew from 45 to approx. 100 employees. At the same time, the acquisition gave us access to a large group of new markets. In 1997 we changed name from Spedition FREJA A/S to FREJA Transport & Logistics A/S. The name change signaled a future-oriented profile with focus on total logistics solutions. Today, the company is a credible and professional player in the local and international markets. 1998 became the year which opened the European groupage market for FREJA, as we became member of the large European alliance TEAM.
From a Danish to a Nordic transport company with global activities
The first international takeover that FREJA made was the takeover of the previous partner in Finland – Maa ja Meri Oy. The takeover took place in 2003. Since then, FREJA has established itself in Sweden, Norway, Poland and China through acquisitions and own-establishments. Today, the FREJA group is a real global player with branches in Denmark (Skive (head office), Taastrup, Aarhus and Padborg), Finland (Turku, Vantaa and Vaasa), Norway (Oslo, Bergen, Fjeldbo, Stavanger, Ålesund and Kristiansand), Sweden (Helsingborg, Jönköping and Trelleborg), Poland (Szczecin, Gdynia, Lóds, Warszawa, Blonie and Tczew) and China (Shanghai, Guangzhou and Qingdao).
Since 1985 FREJA has achieved an explosive growth with an average annual growth rate of approx. 20 percent. This successful and controlled growth rate was awarded with the Danish business newspaper Børsen’s Gazelle Award in 1999, being the first Gazelle Award out of the three, which FREJA has received so far. The latest prize, which FREJA has achieved, is ‘Entrepreneur of the year’ within the category ‘Service’ in Denmark in 2007.
A professional logistics partner in the global market
Comprehensive global transport alliances, storage facilities, our own bonded warehouses, order booking, packing and packaging jobs and end-user deliveries mean that FREJA is an attractive alliance partner for all areas of the business. Major IT investments have helped promote the flexibility and the overview expected by transport customers of the future.
